Why Commercial Evidence Is Becoming Sport's Next Competitive Advantage

Sponsors increasingly expect more than visibility and brand exposure. They want clear evidence that their investment is delivering measurable value. Discover how sports organisations can connect fragmented data, transform existing insights into decision-ready commercial evidence, and build stronger sponsorship conversations, partnerships and renewal opportunities. As sponsorship continues to grow, the ability to access and use commercial insight quickly is becoming a competitive advantage. By making existing information more usable, rights holders can spend less time searching for answers and more time using evidence to make confident commercial decisions.

Sponsors no longer buy pure exposure. They need proof that their investment is working.
For decades, sponsorship has been sold on traditional measures: logo placement, broadcast reach, hospitality and brand association. These established assets still matter and continue to play a key role in the success of sport as a powerful marketing platform. However, in today's world they no longer win commercial partnerships on their own. Today's sponsors also want evidence.
Sponsors want to know which audiences they are reaching, how perceptions are changing, whether partnerships genuinely influence behaviour and whether their investment delivers measurable commercial value.
Deloitte's Beyond the Logo research found that 62% of brands believe better data is the key to stronger sponsorship partnerships. That’s a huge opportunity for a global sports sponsorship market (estimated at $75 billion in 2026) that is forecast to grow nearly 30% to $96 billion by 2030. The commercial gains on offer for rights holders have never been greater but neither has the expectation for delivering that growth.

The hidden cost of fragmented insight
Most rights holders already possess the information needed to answer these questions, so the problem isn't collecting more information, it's connecting data sets that already exists.
Across clubs, leagues and governing bodies, valuable commercial insight is often trapped in spreadsheets, PDFs, agency presentations and disconnected software. When a commercial director needs evidence ahead of a sponsor meeting, the answer is frequently, "We probably have that somewhere."
That gap has real consequences. Commercial teams wait days for simple data requests and insight teams spend their time reproducing the same analysis instead of generating new ideas. Sponsor renewal presentations are rebuilt from scratch, despite much of the evidence already existing somewhere inside the organisation.
Forrester research found that 76% of marketers who invested in sports sponsorships said they struggled to calculate ROI. The challenge isn't a lack of data; it's the inability to turn existing information into decision-ready evidence quickly enough to influence commercial conversations.
The organisations already getting ahead
The most progressive rights holders are responding by making their existing insight more usable, not simply collecting more of it.
Premiership Rugby has used YouGov audience intelligence to segment supporters and identify the brands most aligned with its fanbase, creating stronger, evidence-backed partnership conversations.

Leinster Rugby worked with BearingPoint to connect ticketing, attendance and fan touchpoints into a single customer view after recognising that fragmented information was limiting both marketing and sponsorship planning.
The same pattern extends beyond clubs. World Athletics partnered with Nielsen to develop a broader framework for measuring the value of hosting its World Championships, recognising that governments, broadcasters, commercial partners and federations all define success differently. Meanwhile, World Rugby's partnership with WeAre8 demonstrates how governing bodies are increasingly linking digital fan engagement with long-term commercial value.
Different organisations, using different technologies, but arriving at the same conclusion.
Competitive advantage increasingly comes from making existing information usable.
As Deloitte observed, "If they don't see the numbers to prove value, they spend their money elsewhere."
From reporting to commercial evidence
Analysing and presenting the important numbers is where many organisations still encounter friction. Research agencies produce excellent studies, and internal BI teams build sophisticated reporting, but commercial conversations rarely happen according to reporting schedules from your partners or internal team workflow schedules.
Reporting explains what happened, but commercial evidence helps people make decisions and it’s a distinction that is becoming ever more critical. And that evidence must keep accumulating consistently across a season, not the day before the renewal meeting when it really matters.
The next competitive advantage
This is the challenge Experienz is solving for customers today. We don’t replace research providers or business intelligence platforms, but we do provide a commercial evidence layer across the information our client organisations already own. Fan research, sponsor studies, social media reviews, market intelligence and commercial data are connected and modelled in a single environment, allowing teams to answer sponsor questions quickly, consistently and with confidence.
If you are preparing for a renewal meeting, identifying the right brand prospects or demonstrating value to investors and boards, the goal is the same: reduce the time spent searching for information and increase the time spent using it.
The organisations that win the next generation of sponsorship deals are already transforming fragmented information into clear, defensible commercial evidence, so they are ready every time they're asked the difficult question.
A dashboard shows numbers. An evidence layer answers questions, so they don’t need asking.
